Expanding your vocabulary 01
I’m often asked how you can expand your vocabulary. Here’s one idea for you to consider: learning antonyms and synonyms.
When you learn a new verb or adjective, learn its antonym (or its opposite) and/or its synonym too.
Examples:
1. The verb to repair:
The opposite of to repair = to break. We now mentally associate to repair with to break.
Then learn a synonym or two of to repair. Two synonyms of to repair are to mend and to fix. Now you’ll mentally associate the verbs repair, mend and fix together.
2. The adjective interesting:
The opposite of interesting = boring.
Interesting has many synonyms. Two examples are: fascinating and entertaining.
Two examples of synonyms of boring are: uninteresting and dull.
Write short simple sentences with the words to help you consolidate and practice further.
Studying this way, you’ll immediately have many new words in your vocabulary. Try it and let me know!
