Add the right quantities of various ingredients…

Every day I hear students saying “I need to study more grammar”, “I cannot speak properly, I must study grammar”, “My English is very bad; I do not know enough grammar”, “My grammar is very bad”.

Yes, grammar is a very important ingredient in language learning but remember to make a perfect cake you need the right quantities of various ingredients!

Only focusing on grammar, the language won’t sound very natural. Your grammar might be correct but your responses won’t always be appropriate.

Using too much vocabulary and no grammar, would make us sound a bit like Tarzan – “Me Tarzan, you Jane”!

You can express yourself quite well even with basic grammar but you cannot express yourself very well without having a good vocabulary.

So let’s say, add around 300g of grammar, 300g of vocabulary, 100g of idioms, 200g of functional language and 100g of good pronunciation, mix all the ingredients together well and you should get some good results!
