Stop the excuses, find the solutions!
There is nothing more frustrating than wanting or knowing you have to do something, but really not knowing where to start! We focus on the problem, on what we cannot do. We initially, use the most common excuses of not having enough time or not having enough money. Then we start complaining and blaming someone – our partners, our kids, our bosses, our colleagues, the government. Then when we get tired of making excuses and blaming everyone under the sun, we brush the problem under the carpet for, as the saying goes “out of sight, out of mind”!
We allow ‘negative’ things to happen to us due to lack of action and being unwilling to do what is necessary to improve our lives and achieve what we want. A small issue gets bigger and more out of proportion the longer we try to ignore it. The problem, however, remains until we actually DO something about. We need to shift the focus from the problem to finding the solution.
There is always a solution and with the limitless information available on internet now, we can learn how to do anything that is stopping us from moving forward in our lives. We can download an e-book, do an online/offline course, watch a ‘how to’ video on YouTube or Video Jug or, we can connect with people who can help, advise and guide us to a/the solution.
Stop the excuses, find the solutions!
Learn some new expressions:
I managed to put in a few idioms in the text for you to learn this week – see them highlighted in bold!
1. To brush the problem under the carpet = attempt to ignore it or hide it.
2. Out of sight, out of mind = If you do not see someone or something frequently, you will forget about it.
3. To blame everyone under the sun
4. To make excuses – this is a false friend in Italian. It does not mean ‘fare le scuse’. It means ‘inventare scuse’ – to justify why you don’t or didn’t do something.
I would love to hear from you about a particular problem you have in English; something you find confusing – a grammar point, a vocabulary problem, a pronunciation problem, an idiomatic phrase – anything. Let’s look at the problem and find the solution once and for all!
Enjoy learning!
