Asking for clarification is all part of the learning process!

0

I hear many learners of English in the corporate world that are worried about not understanding what a foreign colleague or manager says to them but who are so reluctant to ask them to repeat or clarify.

Here’s something to think about…

Would you be angry or nervous to have to repeat what you said if you realized that the person you were communicating with hadn’t understood clearly what you were saying? I’m sure you wouldn’t.

Never feel embarrassed or self conscious for wanting or needing to confirm information you have been given whether it is in writing, on the phone or in person. The person you are communicating with really does not care about having to repeat what they have said. It’s in their best interest that you understand perfectly any information they have to give you. It’s important for them too, that you are able to do your job well.

Here are some simple phrases you can use in these situations:

“I’m sorry, but I’m not sure if I have understood. Could you repeat that again, please?

“Could you say that again, please?”

“Would you mind repeating that, please?”

“Would you mind saying that again, please?”

“I’d like to clarify those points again, please.”

“I’m sorry, but did you say 13 (1 – 3) or 30 (3 – 0)?”

“Let me read those numbers/names/addresses back to you….”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name/number/that. Could you repeat it, please?”

“I’m sorry, I’m not sure I understand. Would you mind explaining it again, please?”

Never feel humiliated to have to double check that you have the right information to be able to work effectively with. And…

Never forget that asking for clarification is all part of the learning process!

Enjoy learning!
