Verb and preposition collocations

0

One of the most difficult elements in learning English are the prepositions. I’ve often spoken to people who have a very good command of the grammar, an excellent vocabulary range, great fluency but they get too many prepositions wrong!

Start learning the verb plus the correct preposition right from the beginning. Learn the verb and preposition collocations. Studying this way, you will always get the preposition right.

For example, don’t just study the verb to listen but study the verb plus its preposition – to listen to – because you always listen to something or someone.

i.e.

Listen to me!”,

“I’m listening to my favourite music.”,

“Just listen to those birds chirping this morning!”

“She just won’t listen to me.”

Don’t just study the verb to depend but also the correct preposition that follows it– on – so study to depend on because you always depend on something or someone.

i.e.

“Are you coming to John’s party?”  “I don’t know, it depends on Anna.”

“Children depend on their parents”

“Have you decided which university to go to yet?”   “Yes, but it depends on my exam grades”

“Our success depends on everyone working hard”
